Is Drinking Soda Suicide? Quitting Soda 2.0 Is Here!

How to quit soda. Why to quit soda.

Soda or “pop” as we used to call it as kids seems to be getting a lot of press these days.

With all the new studies of the effects of sugar on the body being published people are starting to see the sugar they drink in large amounts as one way to cut back their sugar consumption.

Easier said than done as most of us have found out.

Most sodas that people love also contain caffeine and the double-whammy of sugar and caffeine makes quitting doubly hard.

Lots of blogs and health sites talk about quitting soda but almost none reference the caffeine addiction as a big part of the process.

Many folks I know, myself included, drank multiple sodas per day mostly for the caffeine and not the sugar – or so I thought.

I’ve come to believe it’s the combination that is so appealing. I think the sugar takes the edge of the caffeine a little and makes the quick little energy lift that much more palatable. The ultimate crash notwithstanding.

You know they have PhD scientists that have full-time jobs figuring out the right mix of those types of things right?

Anyway, combine the two, sugar and caffeine and you have a really tough issue.

When people attempt to quit sugar they must first tackle the soda and caffeine issue and/or the coffee and sugar issue.

You’re not going to even believe I’m going to say this but you are going to need sugar to get off caffeine. Seriously.

Like a medically assisted detox from hard drugs – sugar is going to be your friend when you quit caffeine.

It’s always my advice to quit everything and anything you’ve decided to quit one thing at a time so you can see exactly what that one thing feels like isolated. The exception is if you’re in a treatment center with trained personnel to assist you.

When it comes to caffeine, it is so powerful that it must be eliminated before you attempt your sugar detox because it will just confuse the heck out of your cravings when you start your sugar detox – if you don’t wean yourself off caffeine 100% before you start to do the same with sugar.

That includes chocolate!

Most people really space the idea that chocolate contains caffeine.

MOM! The guy who runs SugarAddiction.com just said I can drink soda as long as it doesn’t have caffeine in it!

So here’s The Quitting Soda 2.0 Plan:

Caffeine goes first.

We’re going to use the same methods for both caffeine and sugar.

We’re going to wean ourselves down.

First, you need to write down and figure out how much caffeine you’re eating and drinking a week. Just write it all down in week one.

Then for the next few weeks, we’ll be cutting it in half. So if you’re at four colas a day then drop to two a day in week one. Then drop to one a day in week two. In week three you’ll be quitting cold turkey.

Do the same with chocolate. *You thought I forgot huh?

Now look, you can drink noncaffeinated sodas and eat other sugary candies during the caffeine wean but please do yourself a favor and try water and fruit instead.

Some folks arrive at their sugar detox with a bigger sugar habit than before they quit caffeine.

Next, comes the sugar soda detox. If you were able to stick at two sugar sodas a day with no caffeine then in week one drop to just one. Then go cold turkey and start on your food, candy etc detox – cold turkey.

Drinking liquid sugar and caffeine truly is suicide. It’s a slow death. If the only thing you ever do with regards to quitting sugar is to follow the advice of eliminating soda you’ll lose a ton of weight and feel much calmer too.

Hopefully, you’ll feel so good you’ll be motivated to quit all added sugars for a time and see how you feel.  Quit Sugar Now
