Sugar Sensitive, Sugar Dependent or Sugar Addict?

Sugar Sensitive, Sugar Dependent or Sugar Addict - Which are you?

I’m so grateful to be a recovering sugar addict. My ability to feel joy, real joy has been returned to me. Simple things like the sunshine make my day and give me great joy.

One thing I’ve learned about sugar abuse, of any kind or at any level, is it toys with your body’s simple feel good mechanisms.

We don’t need to go into just how it down regulates your serotonin receptors. A new study comes out almost every day now, that’s no longer at issue.

What IS at issue is how your body reacts to the sugar it ingests and just how sensitive or susceptible you are to sugar when it enters your body.

It really does make a difference.

Everyone is different.

The three levels of susceptibility listed in the heading above are important markers to determine not only how it affects you but how to change or get help changing if that’s what you desire.

Sugar Sensitives are just that – sensitive to sugar. They may break out, they may get the normal crash after a big ingestion of sugar and they could eventually abuse sugar if they continue to use it.

For the most part, they are aware of their bodies reaction and can handle sugar(sort of).

Some need a little help in “righting themselves” around sugar but the “draw” to sugar is not that powerful.

Sugar Dependents are the next level of susceptibility to sugar.

They actually develop a little(or sometimes large) dependency on sugar. They seem to need it when they’re a little down or they need a little energy. If they have an important meeting they would never think of taking it without some sugar.

Usually, the sugar is hidden in the coffee.

Most folks never understand when I say that the coffee is just a delivery vehicle for the sugar, like soda. Don’t get me started on caffeine, though. 🙂

Sugar dependency is where people seem to relate.

They can accept that they may have developed a little dependency. As witnessed by their previous attempts to quit or cut back, by the time they reach SugarAddiction.com they are convinced something’s up.

Both Sugar Sensitive and Sugar Dependent folks can VERY easily pass into sugar addiction. I like to call this type a “push” addict.

If you push enough sugar through your body it will become addicted. I see this in folks with almost no genetic predisposition to alcoholism. If they somehow just keep drinking the physical addiction occurs.

Sugar Addicts. Period full stop. Gosh, how I love sugar addicts! Just the thought of meeting another one gets me all excited.

Weird, I know.

But remember I get to hang out with recovering sugar addicts too. People who have starred some dire circumstances in the face and lived to tell the tale. Sometimes some life and death type stuff.

Sugar addicts are honest. They are willing to fight to get what they know they’ve wanted for most of their adult life.

To dramatic?

Naaa.

To real.

Heck, I even forgot to describe the symptoms of what describes or defines a sugar addict like I did for the other two above!

Do I really need to?

Seriously.

What I love about you – if you’ve read this far – is that you’ve read this far.

That small still voice is saying “who am I kidding?”

And asking: “Can I trust this guy? Does he really know what I’m going through?”

The answer to both questions is yes.

I’m a fellow sugar addict. “And all that that entails”

I get you probably, right now, on a deeper level than you get yourself.

This thing has taken it’s toll and you’re tired.

Not only are you physically tired from the sugar abuse to your body but you’re mentally tired from thinking about it.

Planning how to stop or cut back. Worried about the weight gain, diabetes, your kids and sugar – the constant freaking worry – with no positive action – even though you’ve tried!

Well look at that – I did describe a sugar addict! I left out the withdrawals part but even the first two get that. I know you do.

**Side note** I’m not a huge fan of the term addict anymore. It’s demeaning and it raises issues of stigma. But until the world(and Google) accepts the new languaging ie: Substance Use Disorder or Sugar Use Disorder we’re kind of stuck with this descriptor.** Rant complete.

The symptoms of what makes us addicts are all over the site if you have interest. If you haven’t taken the sugar addiction quiz then that will help a little, it’s in the top right-hand corner of the page or here.

If you feel you have an issue, of any kind, with sugar – I got your back.
