Sugar Use Disorder Recovery Goes Viral

Sugar Use Disorder Recovery Goes Viral

I love this job. I’m still trying to figure out how I got so lucky!

I think back to when I struggled with quitting sugar. The two Tylenol in my pocket every morning to ward off the headaches that would predictably come around four o’clock.

Every morning I would begin with “Today is the Day” but by noon or one, I was back using some type of sugar. The days I did make it past four o’clock and the headache would start were the worst.

I’d take the pills and swear to make it to bed without sugar. But usually, I’d end up with a two Tylenol and sugar buzz by eight.

I’d end every day with “Tomorrow is the Day.”

Nighttime was the worst for me – it was when the actual binges would start.

I’d start with a large pizza that I was going to share with my roommates. (if they came home).

I’d eat the whole thing.

Then I’d start on “just a bowl of ice cream”  and end up eating the carton. Both the pizza and the ice cream washed down with Sprite or Seven Up. (I had quit caffeine and thought that the sugar in soda was no big deal.)

All this on top of a regular kind of body building 4,000 calorie day, I had already eaten dinner.

Today all that is a distant memory and I have the distinct privilege of helping other folks recognize the real issues with sugar and help them change if they care to.

When I started years ago most folks thought I was nuts.

It’s only recently, in the last 24 months, that the idea that sugar might be hugely dangerous has surfaced, or should I say – resurfaced.

The needle is moving.

Moreover, occasionally a post, video or forum conversation will go “viral”.

It all started with Dr. Robert Lustig’s now famous lecture on Fructose.

Then the documentaries started. Tons of good ones.

This year it’s Gary Taubes book: The Case Against Sugar.

Luckily even our Facebook page has had a few viral hits here.

Even before the Internet, there were a few books that went viral. Sugar Busters was a huge hit when it was published and before that Sugar Blues was big too.

It seems that every January this information is in demand and book publishers and video producers make the best of it. By March, however, we’re all back to business as usual.

Science marches forward. The tools are getting better. The tests are getting better. But who knows when a doctor will able to definitively say: “Continuing to eat sugar may cause X or may cause and early death or that it definitely causes obesity. We all admit we’re not there yet.

No matter how deep in our soul, proven out by helping thousands of people, we believe these things.

Our job has always been to separate fact from fiction and let you decide how to best change your ways.
