Tough Love, Just Do It, Gandhi and Sugar.

Tough Love, Just Do It, Gandhi and Sugar

I’m not a big fan of “tough love”

I don’t think it works.

It sounds good and all, but in reality – not so much.

“People Need to Bottom Out”.

You hear it all the time with other addictions.

They need to hit a “personal bottom.”

Lovely.

Pure crap, all pure crap.

You can push the stop button, on any floor on the elevator, and get out at any time.

You don’t need to have it crash in the basement and crawl, bloodied and battered, back up to the first floor with diabetes, obesity and other health problems.

You just don’t.

In the world of quitting sugar and losing weight or getting healthy, the same solution is parroted by everyone, including healthcare workers – telling you to “Just Stop”.

Stop eating so much sugar.

Oh, and while you’re at it exercise too.

“Eat right and exercise” is their answer to the problem the entire world is facing

— Right?

Wrong.

We’ve been trying that for three decades now and the problem just seems to get worse every year.

Consumption of sugar, people’s weight, and health problems are all still going in the wrong direction. Period, no way to debate that.

So what is the answer?

Did I ever tell you Gandhi’s story around sugar, him quitting and exactly where his famous quote came from?

In the 1930’s  a very concerned mother and her son, who admired him greatly, walked many miles in a scorching sun to meet with the famous man.

When she arrived she told him to please advise her son to stop eating sugar – that it is ruining his health.

Gandhi looked at the mother, then the son, and said: “Please return in two weeks time and I will advise your son.”

The mother was perplexed but followed the request of the great man.

Two weeks later she returned.

Gandhi said to the boy “You must stop eating sugar it’s going ruin your health.”

The boy was happy to do anything he said and said he would stop.

The confused mother then asked Gandhi why he had made them come back in two weeks time.

Why didn’t he tell him that the first time?

Bupa (father as he was called) whispered to her: “two weeks ago I was not qualified to advise your son. I needed that time to quit sugar myself.”

Now you know where the world famous quote originated:

“You Must First Be The Change You Want
To See In This World”
 …Mahatma Gandhi

At this juncture in history, sadly we are not going to be able to rely on some of the more traditional forms of personal change, personal growth, and personal responsibility.

We are going to need to rely on ourselves.

Our own research, our own gut instinct and we are going need to team with people who have done the things we want to do.
