Quitting Something You Love

i quit sugar, Quitting Something You Love

On New Year’s Day, I was recording an interview for the Kick Sugar Summit 2017 coming up on January 23rd.

I never even thought about it being a holiday. And strangely enough neither did my guest.

The thank you’s are almost enough.

The thank you’s for helping folks bring that part of their lives under control. But what would really help is if we could reach more people. Especially the kids.

I rack my brain trying to figure out how to get this message of sugar freedom out to more people.

I’ve talked many times about people not liking the word “addiction”. They seem to negate all the good work around the process of quitting or controlling sugar because of the label of a sugar addict.

My guest was pretty adamant about not getting hung up on semantics – the games people play with words.

She had an interesting take on the word and the profession of addiction medicine.

That through much trial and error the addiction medicine folks have seen a lot of people, say in the disordered eating units and that all their information and work can be of huge help to the average person who just wants to help control sugar.

Also, that everyone is on a continuum, a scale with “normal” sugar user on one end and sugar addict on the other.

The goal is to find where exactly you fall on the scale and use the information to help yourself.

Most of you took the sugar quiz which will give you a good idea of exactly where you fall.

But then what?

What do we do with this information?

How do we act on it?

You have to quit what you love

Sugar has been a friend, a comfort, and lover for many years. It’s always been there and it never talks back.

Sadly some relationships are toxic. The other person or thing isn’t bad, you’re not bad – but together things just get ugly.

You may even love the person or thing but when you interact the results aren’t good.

Sugar is one of those things for some people.

To quote a mentor of mine: “ Personal change needs some space to happen. To bring something new into your life, you need somewhere to put it. If your current habits are filling your day, where is this new stuff supposed to go?”

If you want a life that’s different from the one you have today – you need to make some room for it.

I’ve recently been attracted to the idea of “A Big Life”. A life that no longer has me hiding because I’m worried what others will say.

I wonder if you might be thinking the same thing?

Thinking about how different your life would be if you dropped to a right sized body. If you weren’t exhausted all the time and tied up mentally with thoughts of: “Did I eat too much sugar today?” “Can I have that one more?” “Damn that binge last night — I had things to do today”  ….and on and on.

To grow sometimes we have to let go of things we love. Or at least step away long enough to gain some perspective.
