Sugar: The Drug for Women(and men) Who Do Too Much, Love Too Much

Sugar Addicts do to much

People pleasers.

That’s the semi-official name for us.

We work hard at making sure others are happy while we don’t take care of our own needs adequately.

Frustrating I know.

But when you’ve worked with people quitting sugar as long as I have patterns start to develop.

Maybe you’re the busy, working mom who does both jobs to perfection.

Or maybe you’re the perfect student who takes great care of her boyfriend, gets straight A’s and feels like she’s taking care of her parents and siblings too!

Men suffer too.

We’re afraid to rock the boat.

We play “the nice guy.”

Meanwhile, all of us are covering up our feelings with sugar – the slow drip constant use of sugar and the occasional binge.

It’s actually hard to do something for ourselves or to understand why that is. Even harder to put our fingers on exactly what we need. We haven’t thought about it in so long.

And here’s the wildest part:

We all do it!

Our data shows that when we survey our clients we get the same answers back.

The data is consistent with what treatment centers see in folks who have paid upwards of $30,000 or more for a 28-day inpatient treatment stay.

How can that be?

How can people who might have an issue with sugar – be so alike in how and why and what traits they have?

That answer might be above my pay grade.

(not really but there several good books written about it so this might not be the time or place)

But I know what’s not above my pay grade.

The solution.

The same solution that works in those $30,000 dollar treatment centers can work for you.

Do you hate that I’m dragging this out? LOL Sorry..

The solution is Self Care. Yes, Self Care.

Taking care of yourself first. Not second. First!

If you’re like me you just had a tinge of “Oh no” I can’t do that! My husband, my kids, my boss, my girlfriend, my lover – they need me.

What the hell is self-care anyway and why and how can it help me?

In this context, it’s tiny acts of caring for yourself first before you take care of the needs of others.

Simple stuff. Take the time to take a walk. Go to a yoga class. Take a long hot bath instead of a quick shower, get your nails done.

Then there’s “the classic” that every peer to peer mentor, sponsor, coach or therapist will tell you when you start working with them: get yourself a massage.

Why do you think that is?

Because it works.

But it only works when it becomes a habit.

Very similar to the habit of paying yourself first when trying to save money. The benefits accrue over the long term.

We go much, much deeper into the reasons and benefits of self-care in our book Quit Sugar Now.

If you are ready to really change your relationship with sugar there will be a little introspection involved. Folks that can’t be honest with themselves don’t fair as well.

Some of the symptoms of lack of self-care are “bone tiredness”(medical term), scattered, anxious, weight gain, lack of the motivation that you used to have and a host of others.

If any of these apply to you, or you might have seen yourself in the words above, please join us silly, fun, mostly happy self-care junkies here: Quit Sugar Now Super Secret Group – Where – No One but Us Knows You’re Here
