Growing up I got that question all the time. Hey, Mike – Are you related to Judy Collins?

If the guy was a jerk I’d say yes she’s my aunt or a third cousin, twice removed. Just to get rid of the ridiculous questioner.

Judy was a pop sensation when I was young. Well hell, at 77 she still plays over 100 dates a year – so I guess she still is.

Fact is we’re no relation.

Well sort of.

She’s one of us!

Or should I say she’s a kin to me by her declarations, vulnerability and honesty in her new book Cravings: How I Conquered Food.

One of the fascinating parts for me, being a student of diets, weight, fitness and recovery, is that she has included an extensive history lesson of the great diet gurus and diet programs of our time.

It’s disguised as an autobiography of her roller coaster eating history and many failed attempts to find peace with food.

She also tells the little-known story of the founding of OA (Overeaters Anonymous) and, in her opinion and mine, the mistakes that OA made – prompting the growth of OA offshoots that brought her success.

The reason she mentions the offshoot programs is because one finally worked for her.

Its main tenant: No Sugar, No Flour.

There it is again.

Almost every best-selling diet book for the last 50 years has had all this extra stuff in it.

Cucumber juice, lemonade with maple syrup and cayenne pepper(master cleanse), the cabbage soup diet, the charcoal diet, and on and on.

OMG, I just broke out laughing out loud.

But every one of them, as like a footnote or afterthought say: “Oh yeah, and don’t eat flour and sugar.”

You’re probably tired of hearing me say this. Except the new folks – welcome.

The problem is not the first 30 days of a detox, cleanse or diet. The issue(s) start arising when we try to maintain this lifestyle to keep the weight we lose off.

There are very valid statistics that say less than 1% of men ever actually reach their goal weight and of that 1% – less than 1% actually keep it off.

Read that again.

1% of 1%.

Aunt Judy struggled most of her adult life!
