Lasting Change is a Process, Not a Resolution.

 

I’ve been good and I’ve been bad when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions.

I could tell you of incredible things that have happened in my life by simply writing them down and setting a realistic time to accomplish them.

Life changing things.

But I can also regale you with tons of things that I’ve “resolved” to do on a New Year’s resolution and never even moved an inch on.

Resolutions can be tricky. They aren’t really goals, are they? There more like more solidified wishes. Sort of like – maybes…

Food and diet ones, for some reason, seem to be the most tricky and it’s for all the reasons we teach.

This combination of self-medicating biochemical tinkering, brain function manipulation, emotional hijinks, actual physical body devastation – couple that with the mental shenanigans we use on ourselves to keep ingesting the stuff, after we swear off it, and you have a nuclear cocktail for illness and disaster.

This whole sugar thing can sometimes get overwhelming.

So many people, myself included, in our private group are not perfect.

Some quit sugar the first day and never look back. But most are happily just “in the process”.

What has set in is solid awareness.

As they get a week, a month or more off the stuff they start to get a “feeling” in their body and mind of what it feels like to be free of the stuff and they now know where they want to be.

They know the difference now.

They are developing the tools to control or eliminate sugar.

Let me tell you here and now. No one does this thing perfectly. It’s three steps forward and four back sometimes.

But each time you get stronger. Each time you get a little more aware.

In my book, you’ll see it took me almost two years to quit sugar. Two years! Now it doesn’t have to take that long and this was almost 30 years ago and there was almost zero info on all this, let alone any support.

But I did have some tools from other things I had quit.

I knew that each time I re-ingested I felt worse. Sugar was no longer doing what it first did for me.

In a way, it had turned on me. Or maybe it just overstayed it’s welcome in my body?

Who knows, honestly, who the hell cares?

What really matters is I kept committing to the process.

This. Takes. Support.

We’ve all tried it alone. It just doesn’t work that way.

The process of getting ourselves educated and committing not only to ourselves but to other, loving people who want the same thing in their life.

Accountability.

Damn, I always hated that word.

It always seemed like the opposite of freedom to me.

Like I HAD to do something, be somewhere or complete something.   Had to.

What I found though was the exact opposite. Once the thing was done, once the commitment was complete, or even in process, there was this weird freedom that would come over me.

Like getting out of your last exam of the school year – the cartwheels in the schoolyard feeling.

Feel that right now.

Feel that kind of freedom.

The entire summer ahead, another grade behind you.

Since we became adults numbed by food, sugar, TV, work, bills, relationships and more we let those feelings be papered over.

They’re still under there.

The question is: Is 2018 the year you bust through the paper walls holding you down, holding you back?

I always loved that “busting through the paper wall” thing that they do at the beginning of a football game. When the team comes fly through the big picture.
