Let’s Get Social… Social Media and Sugar Recovery

Let’s Get Social.. Social Media and Sugar Recovery

I’m a big time introvert.

I never thought that could extend to social media. I mean I have this screen and wires and thousands of miles between you and I.

So why would I still feel out of my element interacting with you on social media?

It doesn’t make sense  …until it does.

One of my mentors feels the same way.

He has a huge online presence in lots of ways but no real “social media.”

Having the tug of people on you, the constant need to reply or say something witty or relevant – that just seems to bring pressure that is not my most comfortable default setting.

We have social media for the website and for some reason I feel very comfortable there…

Go figure.

If we were talking about my family or the birthday party last weekend it wouldn’t be the same.

But talking sugar and sugar addiction and I’m in.

Here’s what we’ve found with the folks in our public and private groups.

These online groups seem to serve a very important purpose in the recovery of sugar addicts and binge eaters.

In technical and treatment center speak food addictions of all kinds are “dis-eases of isolation.” In other words, people who suffer, from all addictions really, tend to be isolators.

They tend to feel alone, sometimes even when they’re in a crowded room.

The more obvious part of sugar addiction and food addiction, in general, is the shame that people feel over the behavior.

They do not want people to see them eating whatever. So as a result, they hide away. They isolate.

While social media is not the perfect answer to this issue – sometimes it provides a great “bridge” back to normal social interaction.

While it goes without saying, sometimes people’s weight makes them feel even less like being social IRL. (in real life)

So what’s the answer?

While admittedly not the perfect solution we have found that folks who interact with us on Facebook and YouTube seem to be able to begin the process of reaching out and asking for help.

They are able to safely get to know others who are dealing with the same things..

– they can relate.

Sometimes that’s all it takes.
