When I first quit sugar there were only a few books on the issue even in print. That was almost 30 years ago. I learned a heck of a lot from “Sugar Blues” by William Duffy. Originally written in 1975 it was updated in 1986.
It’s a fascinating story of his soon to be wife Gloria Swanson. Yes, that Gloria Swanson!
He was a reporter at a party and he was putting a sugar cube in his coffee. From behind him he hears this incredible voice say: “I wouldn’t have that in my house let alone my body.” Ms. Swanson was way ahead of her time.
Duffy went on to marry her and write a book about sugar that was also decades before it’s time. It’s a truly incredible story. The history lesson alone, about the rise of England due to sugar and the role slavery played in the growth of sugar use, is worth buying the book.
Since I started this website in 2011 there has been an explosion of books on the market. Back then there were less than five books about the topic on Amazon and they didn’t all even use the term sugar addiction in their title.
Today there are over 150! How is someone supposed to get the truth about this subject? My research proves that over 80% of those books on Amazon are pure crap. I mean made for Amazon, 60 page regurgitated junk that are used for lead generation for weight loss pills and websites.
We believe that this is a serious issue and folks need the best information possible.
Sadly what has happened is that people try one of the fancy weight loss programs disguised as a sugar detox or a sugar addiction cure book and end up right back where they started – gaining all their weight back and more.
We know this because the members of our community tell us over and over again the crooked roads they had to take before they found us.
OK, sorry for the rant, on to the newest list of must read books for the person serious this time about controlling sugar in their life.
I want to preface this list to say that this is the list of last resort. This is for the serious folks who have tried literally everything and now are ready to change their lives.
Heavy stuff I know but it’s our specialty at the site. Let’s count William Duffy’s book above as number one, as he certainly deserves to be on this list..
2. Food Addiction: The Body Knows by Kay Sheppard
While Kay is not the best known of the sugar educators out there she is certainly one of the most knowledgeable and experienced. Let’s not be turned off by the food addiction label. Remember one of your strongest weapons here is an open mind. Kay knows her stuff as does Vera below.
3. Food Junkies: The Truth About Food Addiction
Dr. Tarman is a recovering sugar addict herself and has treated hundreds of food addicts. Her experience shows in the five star ratings. The bonus on this one is it’s contributor in the book Phil Werdell, a legend in the recovery movement.
Nicole M. Avena Phd
If you’re interested in the science then this
is the book for you. Dr. Avena brings huge credibility to the movement and brings it from a scientific background. I don’t agree with everything she teaches but I love her passion and scientific approach.
5. Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease. By Dr. Robert Lustig
Dr’s. Avena and Lustig are not as far along as I’d like them to be into the study of sugar as an addiction but their approach as doctors needing to validate everything scientifically is so important as we move forward.
I can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate their work.
One of the things we believe here is that there are many ways to the mountaintop and these books are not only incredible in their comprehensiveness but they are great reads and great contributions. Highly recommended.
Dr Lustig’s foundation at SugarScience.org is paving the way to get this information out to the general public, legislators and doctors.
6. The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes
This book is not even out yet as I write this.
But I can guarantee you need to pre-order it! Based on his seminal work on: Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It. almost 2,000 reviews and still at 4.5 stars! Gary is a tireless advocate of how sugar is harming us. While there is no “how to” on how to quit it’s still an important work.
7. Pure, White, and Deadly: How Sugar Is Killing Us and What We Can Do to Stop It
Another for you history buffs. Written in 1972 by a British scientist who was largely ignored it has been forwarded and updated by the esteemed Dr Lustig from above. If we had listen to John Yudkin, the author, over 40 years ago instead of the folks that said fat was the culprit we would be that much further ahead.
- I would be remiss if I didn’t include my own book in this list. Quit Sugar Now is just out so it’s not yet a classic but it has some important ingredients to help you in your journey. First, each chapter has matching video. I go over everything in the book in detail again on video with you.
